The vocalization of semivowels in medieval English : a quantitative study

Abstract

In a number of positions the Old English semivowels [j] and [w] (as in dæg , flowan ) began losing articulatory strength and were eventually vocalized to [i] and [u], respectively, joining the preceding vowels (cf. the diphthongs in Modern English day , flow ). The present study empirically analyzes and quantifies the influence of various factors on this sound change by looking at spellings of relevant word forms in the lexicogrammatically annotated text corpus published along with the Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English (LAEME) in 2013. Factors that are taken into account include spatial and temporal variables as well as a number of linguistic factors, such as the quantity and quality of the preceding vowels, or the question of which part of a syllable the respective semivowels originally belonged to. Die altenglischen Halbvokale [j] und [w] kamen in bestimmten Positionen vor (vgl. altenglisch dæg , flowan ), in denen sie allmählich an Artikulationsstärke verloren, zu [i] bzw. [u] vokalisiert wurden und sich den vorausgehenden Vokalen anschlossen (vgl. die Diphthonge in neuenglisch day , flow ). Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht und quantifiziert den Einfluss verschiedener Faktoren auf diesen Lautwandel empirisch anhand von Schreibungen relevanter Wortformen im lexikogrammatisch annotierten Textkorpus zum Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English (LAEME), welches 2013 publiziert wurde. Analysiert und miteinander in Bezug gesetzt werden dabei etwa räumliche und zeitliche Gegebenheiten, aber auch eine Reihe linguistischer Faktoren, wie z. B. die Quantität und Qualität der vorhergehenden Vokale oder die Frage, welchem Teil einer Silbe der betreffende Halbvokal in der altenglischen Ausgangssituation angehörte.
