Content
Goals and scope of service
JLUpub is the institutional repository of Justus Liebig University (JLU) Giessen. The operating institution of JLUpub is the University Library of Justus Liebig University Giessen, which is responsible for the implementation of and compliance with the policy.
JLUpub offers all members of Justus Liebig University the opportunity to publish scientific documents and research data electronically and make them permanently accessible. In addition, documents of relevance to the university and its history can be published (see collection mandate).
Open Access and FAIR principles
With its Open Access Resolution, Justus Liebig University Giessen supports the principles of Open Access as described in the Berlin Declaration and the Budapest Open Access Initiative, as well as the FAIR principles for research data.
Publishing in accordance with the principles of Open Access promotes the visibility, verifiability and reusability of the research outputs of Justus Liebig University’s scholars.
Sustainability
The digital objects are given persistent identifiers (DOI) and are findable via national and international library catalogues and search engines. JLUpub guarantees to keep the published content available for the long term within the scope of organisational and technical possibilities and thus complies with the guidelines of the German Research Foundation on handling research data (2015)(pdf) and on safeguarding good scientific practice (2019)(pdf) as well as the research data guideline of Justus Liebig UniversityGiessen (2018)(pdf).
For text documents, digital long-term archiving is ensured through the long-term archiving system of the German National Library. JLU Gießen cannot be held liable for loss or damage of data.
Collection mandate
The following categories of documents and research outputs by members of Justus Liebig University Giessen are published in JLUpub:

Research data: this includes research data that is part of a publication as well as research data that is to be made publicly accessible (if necessary with embargo). JLUpub is not suitable as a storage location for working copies of data that are used on a daily basis. Rather, verified and consistent data should be permanently stored in JLUpub.

Publications with scholarly content, such as journal articles (including pre- and postprints), monographs, edited volumes, research reports, working papers, series, annual reports, journals, conference papers and posters,

Open Access parallel publications of previously published documents in the sense of the Green Road to Open Access,

Publications that must be made public in connection with examination regulations (dissertations and habilitations),

Student theses (e.g. Bachelor’s, Master’s, state examination and seminar theses), if the publication is at the student’s own request and with a recommendation from the supervising professor.

Documents of relevance to the university and its history
Submission and indexing
As a rule, publications and research data are submitted for dissemination via JLUpub using the upload form provided by the repository. For the formal and content-related indexing of the digital objects, nationally and internationally defined standards and interfaces are used, such as the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, the guidelines of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) or the xMetaDissPlus format of the German National Library. Metadata is captured by means of an upload form into which the authors enter the data.
The metadata is reviewed by JLU Gießen and, if necessary, corrected and complemented. The metadata is freely accessible on the internet (CC0 licence) and may be obtained, saved and made available via the available open interfaces.
Legal framework conditions
Any publication in JLUpub requires the gratuitous and irrevocable transfer of simple rights of use by the authors to JLU Gießen. The copyrights of the authors are preserved. Any printed or electronic publication of the research results – with amendments or in excerpts, if applicable –prior to, or after their publication at JLUpub remains at the absolute discretion of the authors.
The transfer of the simple right of use entitles JLU Gießen to permanently

make electronic copies of the digital object publicly accessible (if necessary after expiry of an embargo period) and, if necessary, to modify it technically, e.g. for the purpose of long-term archiving. This permission excludes any modification of the content of the digital object.

report and transfer the digital objects to third parties, e.g. within the framework of national collection mandates, in particular for the purpose of long-term archiving.
In order to regulate the transfer of the required rights of use from the authors to JLU Gießen, the publishing contract must be agreed to when submitting publications and research data in JLUpub.
Authors are recommended to use Creative Commons licences or open software licences to regulate the rights of use to their content.
If the document has already been published and exclusive rights of use have been transferred in the process, the possibility of parallel publication in JLUpub must first be examined. In accordance with the recommendations of the German Council of Science and Humanities, all scholars as well as students of JLU are advised to retain a corresponding usage right when concluding publishing contracts and to additionally make the content they have published available in JLUpub as a secondary publication - possibly after a blocking period (embargo).
In principle, it is possible to impose an embargo on the content submitted for publication. In the case of secondary publications, the duration of the embargo is governed by the applicable legal regulations (secondary publication right Section 38 (1) UrhG and/or any existing publication or publisher conditions). During the embargo, only the descriptive metadata are made accessible to the public, but not the documents or research data themselves.
It is the responsibility of the authors or editors of the digital objects to ensure that the copyrights and rights of use of third parties are respected. Should the rights of third parties nevertheless be infringed, the rights holders release JLU Gießen from all recourse claims by third parties. In the event that the author learns of any existing or emerging legal obstacles, he or she shall notify the JLU Gießen thereof without delay.
JLU Giessen accepts no liability for the content of the digital objects.
JLU Giessen retains the right to reject or to block access to digital objects due to content-related, technical or formal deficiencies, in case of the existence of an actual or alleged legal impediment as well as due to the infringement of third-party rights or of regulations of this policy and/or the publishing contract. The metadata of digital objects once published will not be deleted.
Technical framework conditions
The following conditions apply to digital objects submitted for publication in JLUpub:

For reasons of scientific citability and authenticity, it is not possible to change digital objects once they have been published. If changes are necessary, the modified digital object will be saved as a new version/edition.

The digital objects to be published comply with the technical parameters recommended by the University Library and are not subject to any access restrictions.
JLUpub is operated and continually developed by the University Library of Justus Liebig University. In the operation and continuous development of JLUpub, recommendations and standardisations of national and international initiatives such as the German Initiative for Network Information (DINI) or the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) are taken into account.
JLU Gießen strives for continuous availability of JLUpub and ensures the fastest possible recovery of the application system in the event of possible system failures. JLU Gießen will announce maintenance times early enough in advance.
JLU Gießen ensures the necessary data security, data protection as well as the backup of data by means of regular back-up routines.
