Item A Swedish generation? : On musical chronotopes and pensionerhood(2009) Hylten-Cavallius, SverkerItem Alpenloopings in Heimatklänge : Jodeln als Globalisierungsbewegung zwischen Tradition und Experiment(2012) Martin, SilkeThe subject of my contribution is the functioning and effect of yodeling as an experimental form of vocals and singing as presented in Stefan Schwieterts documentary Heimatklänge [Sounds of home] (CH/D 2007); a recursive figure that co-constitutes what is identified as home and forges a sense of identity. Yodeling enables two home »loops« of a special kind: first, the recursive calling-singing in the Swiss Alps, which returns to inside the body as a result of a specific geographic location and its echo, and second, a worldwide sounds network, which through the art of the three Swiss vocal artists Erika Stucky, Noldi Alder, and Christian Zehnder, forms an acoustic bridge from Switzerland via Mongolia to the USA. The essay follows the associative structure of the ilm, which describes a circular movement that seeks to locate the concept of home while alternating in sounds and images between region and global, own and alien, traditional and experimental. With its description of the hypothesis of the origin of yodeling the study begins with a musicological perspective; next, it present an in-depth film analysis of Heimatklänges presentation of yodeling; finally, it formulates a globalization hypothesis in the context of culture studies, which in conjunction with the film endeavours to rethink the relationship between mountain landscape and people.Item Andere Orte, andere Körper : zum Verhältnis von Affekt, Heterotopie und Techno im Berghain(2015) Henschel, RobertThe text deals with a Berlin techno club called Berghain. It tries to define the place using Foucaults concept of heterotopia as a space that is located simultaniousely within the boundaries of society and on its outside. Within its walls the rules of aesthetic perception and construction of identity follow different mechanisms compared to the ones in everyday life, the latter being embedded into capitalist modes of production and consumption. Using Deleuze and Guattaris notion of affect the text tries to conceptualize the human body and techno music as constructs following the same principles of formation, leaving Berghain as a complex rhizomatic structure that, if regarded as a tool, offers possibilities of critiquing capitalist structures.Item Backwoods: rural distance and authenticity in twentieth-Century American independent folk and rock discourse(2016) Harper, AdamThe value placed on rural musicians is a consistent characteristic of independent popular music culture, particularly with respect to »lo-fi« aesthetics. Antipathetic to what they saw as excessively industrialised and commercialised popular music, urban folk and rock fans have recurrently sought satisfaction in musics of peripheral areas that were considered archaic or »primitive,« conflating musical and geographical distance. Beginning by tracing the roots of this process in Romanticism and folk revivals, I examine the cases and receptions of artists such as Roscoe Halcomb, Hasil Adkins, Beat Happening and Guided By Voices.Item Der beste DJ aller Zeiten?! - Meta-Rankings auf Basis von Leser*innen-Umfragen ausgewählter Musikmagazine der elektronischen Tanzmusik von 1991-2017(2019) Schaubruch, Josef; Ruth, NicolasItem Beyond Major and Minor? The Tonality of Popular Music after 1960(2019) Pfleiderer, MartinItem Conflict, Vagueness, Dissolution : Challenges to meter in Contemporary Jazz(2018) Pfleiderer, MartinItem Determinanten popmusikalischer Kanonisierungsprozesse : eine quantitative Untersuchung von Einflussfaktoren auf die Bewertungspraxis in Jahresbestenlisten(2015) Lehmann, MatthiasThe paper examines current canonization processes in popular music. Beginning with a definition of a canon, which is based upon theoretical concepts from Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault, a primarily sociological perspective will be taken, which understands canonization as a result of a complex balance of power of vari-ous social agents partaking in the canon-discourse. In the empirical part of the paper the rating practices of the readerships and editorial teams of four German music magazines (INTRO, Spex, Rolling Stone, Musikexpress) will be taken into ac-count. With reference to the definition of a canon, to the agents and entities par-ticipating in the selection process as well as to findings of previous investigations, musical and social influencing factors on rating practices on chart lists of the music magazines shall be determined.Item Diggin´ the global crates : Genrehybridität im HipHop(2010) Elflein, DietmarItem Item Die Entstehung des Albums "Watch out for the third rail" der Band LSD(2010) Rick, Detlef aka DJ Rick SkiItem Item Feigning or Feeling? On the Staging of Authenticity on Stage(2020) Appen, Ralf vonItem Fraktale Strukturen im Hard Rock : "Back In Black" (AC/DC), "Highway Star" (Deep Purple) und "The Future Never Dies" (Scorpions) im Fokus einer musikanalytischen Perspektive(2014) Kaiser, UlrichThe following research starts with the observation that in some hard rock songs a close relationship can be established between the initially exposed material of the vocals and the harmonies within the whole song. The disclosure of the epistemo-logical position is followed by references to recent essays regarding harmony in rock music by Walter Everett, Nicole Biamonte and David Temperley. Analyses of "Back in Black" by AC/DC, "Highway Star" by Deep Purple and "The Future Never Dies" by Scorpions form the essay´s main part.Item Item Genese, Folgen und Gefahren digitaler Musikplanungssysteme im Rundfunk : zur "Philosophie" des Formatradios(2016) Rumpf, WolfgangFormatted radio programs targeted at a defined audience were established in Germany in 1985. For these, computers generate playlists which then can be controlled and modified by editors. On the one hand, programs such as AC (adult contemporary), oldie-based AC, AOR (arena, oldies, rock), DOM (deutsch, oldie, moderate), MOR (middle of the road) etc. are very successful; on the other hand they are constantly criticized for sounding all the same. In this paper I describe how the development of digital computer technology in the Silicon Valley since 1975 has influenced media politics and changed broadcasting. In Germany, it was the CDU who wanted to establish private radio and TV stations beside the federal-public system of the ARD (»dual system«) for political reasons in 1984. While the market grew from 50 radio and TV stations to more than 250, editorial journalists complain that their jobs have become meaningless.Item Geschichtsbilder von populärer Musik bei Musiklehrern verschiedener Schularten : eine quantitative Studie(2014) Brunner, GeorgThere is a lack of research in exploring music teachers views on the history of popular music. In this study, qualitative (interviews) and quantitative methods were mixed: six teachers were interviewed, 338 participants responded to a questionnaire. The main questions were: a) What historical images and ways of dealing with popular music are present in the consciousness of music teachers? b) Are there differences by school type, gender, age and type of musician? c) What impact has the university education and instrumental training on the teachers historical image of popular music and on their ways of dealing with it? It shows that popular music within the music studies at universities gains more importance. Nevertheless, the relevance of private studies predominates among young teachers as well as other influences (friends, media, own pupils). This article shows the significant differences between classical and jazz or pop-/rock-orientated music teachers as well as coherences between school type, gender, age and historical images and ways of dealing (e.g. types of musicians, knowledge, using information sources, musical preferences).
