Abstract
Dataset contents:
This item contains the two main audio stimuli used in a music perception study: (1) a fugue and (2) a neo-classical piano piece (NCP). The audio files were produced in the digital audio workstation Cubase using the virtual piano instrument "The Grandeur."
Experimental design:
The stimuli were used in a study with a 2 (music style: fugue vs. neo-classical piano piece) × 2 (order of listening tasks: structural–emotional [SESE] vs. emotional–structural [ESES]) between-subjects design. In addition, each participant listened to the same stimulus four times, which served as the within-subject variable; the specific stimulus (fugue or NCP) was selected randomly per participant group.
Associated measures:
The item is associated with, but does not include, the following instruments, which were used in the study: pre-test questionnaires – the German version of the Arnett Inventory of Sensation Seeking (AISS; Arnett, 1994; German validation: Roth, 2003), the Music Empathizing–Music Systemizing inventory (ME-MS; Kreutz et al., 2008) and the "Musical Training" subscale of the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index (Gold-MSI; Müllensiefen et al., 2014; German validation: Schaal et al., 2014) – as well as post-stimulus measures: the PANAS-KS (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, short version) and two 7-point Likert-scale ratings of liking and experienced intensity of the stimulus.
