Item A construct-psychological approach to the measurement of chill-sensations(2008) Kunkel, Markus; Pramstaller, Christopher; Grant, Phillip; Georgi, Richard vonChills, meaning strong emotional responses to music, have to date been almostonly examined within experimental settings. Within the pilot-study athand the first psychometric inventory for the measurement of subjectivechill-sensations (MRCQ) was developed using two successive samples. Herethrough is should be possible to assess intra- and interindividual differencesreliably and in a standardized fashion outside of a laboratory situation. Thefirst study descriptively examined open questions on chill-sensations on asample of n=151. A second study (n=108) examined the existence of latentdimensions within the pool of items constructed in the first study. Factoranalyses yielded five facettes of chill-sensations: positive, physiological, motor and social-cognitive reactivity as well as general disorientation. Allfive scales reached sufficient reliability for their individual item numbers.Correlations with other inventories (NEO-ffi, IAAM) show that chill-sensationsare closely linked to high extraversion, openness to experience andemotional stability. The results, however, appear to be indicative of differencesbetween the sexes. On a whole the results support existing researchand theoretical models, but there are also some important differences. TheMRCQ offers a possibility of researching chills in non-experimental musicsciences.Item A Swedish generation? : On musical chronotopes and pensionerhood(2009) Hylten-Cavallius, SverkerItem AABA, refrain, chorus, bridge, prechorus : song forms and their historical development(2015) Appen, Ralf von; Frei-Hauenschild, MarkusThis paper deals with different dimensions of the formal construction of songs in 20th century popular music. First, it proposes that the form of songs is not only an obligatory starting point for analysis but is actually itself a worthwhile object of interpretation. It explains how the analysis of the formal song structure can produce meaningful insights on a semantic, symbolic, and functional level. Secondly, the authors provide a critical discussion on the use of prevalent terms such as chorus, refrain, verse, bridge, etc. They show that a study of the historical evolution both of constituent song parts, and of song forms in general, is necessary to overcome the internal contradictions and incompatibilities of the current terminology. This approach is the center of this paper. It refers to the authors analysis of c. 3000 songs spanning the whole 20th century with a focus on the decisive years 1920 to 1970. Illustrating the results with a large number of examples, the authors trace the development of the AABA-form, various verse/chorus-forms, the evolution of the prechorus and various other song parts, and song form models. The findings are supported by statistical data based on the US Billboard Top 100, and show the prevalence of certain models as well as specific trends in historic change. Finally, the paper shows that the awareness of formal conventions and particularities can be an essential pre-condition for the analysis of popular music s cultural meanings.Item Alpenloopings in Heimatklänge : Jodeln als Globalisierungsbewegung zwischen Tradition und Experiment(2012) Martin, SilkeThe subject of my contribution is the functioning and effect of yodeling as an experimental form of vocals and singing as presented in Stefan Schwieterts documentary Heimatklänge [Sounds of home] (CH/D 2007); a recursive figure that co-constitutes what is identified as home and forges a sense of identity. Yodeling enables two home »loops« of a special kind: first, the recursive calling-singing in the Swiss Alps, which returns to inside the body as a result of a specific geographic location and its echo, and second, a worldwide sounds network, which through the art of the three Swiss vocal artists Erika Stucky, Noldi Alder, and Christian Zehnder, forms an acoustic bridge from Switzerland via Mongolia to the USA. The essay follows the associative structure of the ilm, which describes a circular movement that seeks to locate the concept of home while alternating in sounds and images between region and global, own and alien, traditional and experimental. With its description of the hypothesis of the origin of yodeling the study begins with a musicological perspective; next, it present an in-depth film analysis of Heimatklänges presentation of yodeling; finally, it formulates a globalization hypothesis in the context of culture studies, which in conjunction with the film endeavours to rethink the relationship between mountain landscape and people.Item Andere Orte, andere Körper : zum Verhältnis von Affekt, Heterotopie und Techno im Berghain(2015) Henschel, RobertThe text deals with a Berlin techno club called Berghain. It tries to define the place using Foucaults concept of heterotopia as a space that is located simultaniousely within the boundaries of society and on its outside. Within its walls the rules of aesthetic perception and construction of identity follow different mechanisms compared to the ones in everyday life, the latter being embedded into capitalist modes of production and consumption. Using Deleuze and Guattaris notion of affect the text tries to conceptualize the human body and techno music as constructs following the same principles of formation, leaving Berghain as a complex rhizomatic structure that, if regarded as a tool, offers possibilities of critiquing capitalist structures.Item Backwoods: rural distance and authenticity in twentieth-Century American independent folk and rock discourse(2016) Harper, AdamThe value placed on rural musicians is a consistent characteristic of independent popular music culture, particularly with respect to »lo-fi« aesthetics. Antipathetic to what they saw as excessively industrialised and commercialised popular music, urban folk and rock fans have recurrently sought satisfaction in musics of peripheral areas that were considered archaic or »primitive,« conflating musical and geographical distance. Beginning by tracing the roots of this process in Romanticism and folk revivals, I examine the cases and receptions of artists such as Roscoe Halcomb, Hasil Adkins, Beat Happening and Guided By Voices. Item Der beste DJ aller Zeiten?! - Meta-Rankings auf Basis von Leser*innen-Umfragen ausgewählter Musikmagazine der elektronischen Tanzmusik von 1991-2017(2019) Schaubruch, Josef; Ruth, NicolasItem Beyond Major and Minor? The Tonality of Popular Music after 1960(2019) Pfleiderer, MartinItem Conflict, Vagueness, Dissolution : Challenges to meter in Contemporary Jazz(2018) Pfleiderer, MartinItem Determinanten popmusikalischer Kanonisierungsprozesse : eine quantitative Untersuchung von Einflussfaktoren auf die Bewertungspraxis in Jahresbestenlisten(2015) Lehmann, MatthiasThe paper examines current canonization processes in popular music. Beginning with a definition of a canon, which is based upon theoretical concepts from Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault, a primarily sociological perspective will be taken, which understands canonization as a result of a complex balance of power of vari-ous social agents partaking in the canon-discourse. In the empirical part of the paper the rating practices of the readerships and editorial teams of four German music magazines (INTRO, Spex, Rolling Stone, Musikexpress) will be taken into ac-count. With reference to the definition of a canon, to the agents and entities par-ticipating in the selection process as well as to findings of previous investigations, musical and social influencing factors on rating practices on chart lists of the music magazines shall be determined.Item Deutsche Musik in der Prime Time des Radios(2014) Einenkel, Maxi; Fecho, Susanne; Scholz, NinaOver 80% of the German population listen to the radio every day. For them the music is more important than the news broadcast. The authors of this paper wanted to know under what aspects the music program in German radio is planned. Therefore two mainstream radio stations in Hessen, hr3 and Hit Radio FFH, were chosen to evaluate the playlists of their prime time morning show over a period of several weeks. Afterwards the authors led interviews with the head of FFH and the music director of hr3. This research focuses on the question to what extend German radio plays German or rather German-speaking music and if there are differences between private and public-serving broadcasting. Furthermore it questions the stations´ attitudes towards a legal radio quota agreement of German music.Item Diggin´ the global crates : Genrehybridität im HipHop(2010) Elflein, DietmarItem Item Die Entstehung des Albums "Watch out for the third rail" der Band LSD(2010) Rick, Detlef aka DJ Rick SkiItem Item Feigning or Feeling?
