This thesis covers mesostructuring of transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) and the resultant numerous potential applications. Most of us use these materials every day as they feature vital parts of for example touchscreens and solar cells. In the first part the theoretical background of TCO materials, the origin of their electrical conductivity and methods of introducing a defined mesostructure are given. The most common TCO material is tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) which is why this thesis mainly focuses on mesoporous ITO materials.A variety of TCO materials is investigated and three different methods of mesostructuring are used. In the results section the influence of the mesostructure on optical and electrical properties is analysed by state-of-the-art methods i.e. (small-angle) x-ray scattering, electron microscopy, krypton physisorption and electrical impedance spectroscopy.Parts of the TCO syntheses include the use of particular diblock-copolymers, namely the PIB-PEO family (supplied by BASF). These polymers generate exceptionally large mesopores homogeneously while offering the opportunity to tune the size. Evidently, the electrical properties of the mesoporous TCO materials only depend on the pore size and the related pore wall thickness, as bigger pores lead to thicker walls that represent an increased conduction-path cross-section.The applications of these materials are manifold. In one project a biosensor based on mesoporous ITO serving as matrix for the immobilisation of cytochrome c is designed successfully. This sensor detects superoxide radical anions and can be read out spectroscopically.Additionally, the functionality of porous ITO-films as electrode materials is investigated with regard to the conception of dye-sensitised solar cells. In another project these films are used as host for the polymerisation of aniline giving an electrochromic hybrid material that can be switched reversibly between different oxidation states while significantly changing the colour.Concludingly, this thesis provides new insights into the physical properties of TCO materials and reveals novel relevant fields of application.en
