The tooth root surfaces are of great importance for an orthodontic treatment because their size is directly proportional to the therapeutically useful orthodontic forces that may be used on the tooth without damaging the root. The aim of this study was to quantify the root surfaces of the canine teeth and to find a way to determine them externally for every individual animal. 552 tooth root surfaces of 28 dogs were measured after computed tomographic examination with the help of approximately 15.000 individual measurements. For each tooth, the root surface was determined from the apex to the cingulum following a standard protocol. To this end the root circumference was measured in the axial incision on each level of the computed tomographic image and the root surface of the section was calculated out of the circumference. The total root surface of each tooth was obtained as the sum of the measured sections. Based on the measurements of the roots, different relationships with each other and to external located structures especially the crown height were formed. Statistical analysis was performed using linear regression analysis and the "restricted maximum likelihood estimation" method (REML).en
