This doctoral thesis focuses on the implementation of a Digital Teaching File (DTF) for research and education at the Department of Radiology at the University Hospital Gießen and Marburg in Gießen, Germany. The following topics are addressed:- What are the requirements for a DTF?- What are the properties of the already existing DTF?- Is it possible to implement a DTF on the basis of the complex information net-work already in existence at the Gießen University Hospital?- Which requirements have to be newly created? - Are there future prospects for establishing a DTF in other medical departments?Based on the available literature on the topic of DTF, the thesis initially describes the requirements for developing a DTF. The paper then provides an overview of already existing DTF. The analysis shows that none of the solutions already in existence entirely meets the requirements of a DTF. Consequently, in order to establish a DTF within the existing information network at the Department of Radiology at Gießen, a custom-made solution is required, even if existing structures can be used. The necessary re-quirements for the implementation of a DTF are explained in detail. Analyzing the Gießen DTF it can be shown that the suggested solution fulfills all the necessary re-quirements.Unfortunately the DTF in Gießen is rarely used, a problem it shares with many DTF around the world. On the other hand up to 97% of Radiologist are using the Internet in their research and for their professional development. Internet-based DTF like Case of the Day (http://www.cox.at/) and the Medical Imaging Resource Center (MIRC) (http://mirc.rsna.org/query) provide comprehensive case studies and are consulted frequently. Thus it can be assumed that linking the offline Gießener DTF to an online one like MIRC has the potential of increasing the frequency of use substantially. This could lead to appropriate solutions for other DTF as well.Due to the fact that PACS and DICOM are in use in many medical departments, the use of DTF has a future in the medical disciplines that exceeds its application to radiol-ogy. The implementation and use of DTF in different medical departments entails the possibility of improving the conditions for research and education in medicineen
