, Wo komme ich her? , Wo gehöre ich hin? .
Any attempt to seek out one s own roots inevitably touches on larger questions of personal significance such as Who am I? , Where do I come from? and Where do I belong? questions that anticipate the individual s search for ways to establish an identity in the context of transnational mobility. The research underlying this thesis focuses on the various ways in which contemporary travel narratives deal with these issues. Roots gain additional resonance in the context of globalisation, especially against the background of mass migration flows that characterised the second half of the 20th century and early part of the 21st century. As mobility and genealogy interact to create meaning, migration becomes a process of transnational motion and recollection that subverts the traditional conception of the unity of place and ancestry. The title of this thesis, roots trips narratives, summarises and expresses the symptomatic need for roots in the context of globalisation, because the fictions described in this thesis as roots trips narratives have as their themes both the individual longing for roots and the need to explore the self by breaking with routine.en
