    (2015) Lehmann, Matthias
The paper examines current canonization processes in popular music. Beginning with a definition of a canon, which is based upon theoretical concepts from Pierre Bourdieu and Michel Foucault, a primarily sociological perspective will be taken, which understands canonization as a result of a complex balance of power of vari-ous social agents partaking in the canon-discourse. In the empirical part of the paper the rating practices of the readerships and editorial teams of four German music magazines (INTRO, Spex, Rolling Stone, Musikexpress) will be taken into ac-count. With reference to the definition of a canon, to the agents and entities par-ticipating in the selection process as well as to findings of previous investigations, musical and social influencing factors on rating practices on chart lists of the music magazines shall be determined.

    (2015) Burkhart, Benjamin
Although various approaches to the analysis of popular music have been developed over the years, the lack of reggae and dancehall in musicological research is still apparent as is the study of groove in different musical genres. This paper proposes some possibilities to describe the specific interdependencies of rhythm and microtiming in reggae and dancehall music. In order to illustrate these stylistic features and their historical development six well known riddims ranging from late 1960s Roots Reggae to modern dancehall are analyzed and compared using transcriptions as well as spectrograms.

    (2015) Menze, Jonas
The study evaluates cultural practices of German-speaking musical fans. Its aim is to characterize the fans´ behavior and to draw conclusions on their musical theatre reception. Therefore, quantitative methodology was applied: 323 German-speaking musical fans participated in an online survey realized in 2011. They were recruited employing a snowball sampling, starting from seven German-language online forums which focus on musical fandom. The fans can be described as predominantly young, female, unmarried and well educated. The survey shows a broad variety in their musical related cultural practices, for which the actors are a central point of reference. The fans use online media more frequently than offline media (where specialized magazines dominate) and the main motives for the usage of media are the need for information and social interaction. Younger fans deal with their fan object more frequently (especially in online media), which can be understood as a strategy to compensate infrequent visits at live performances. It is shown that the fans use musicals as a resource for own creative work and produce fan art to express themselves in grounded aesthetics. Their media consumption proves to be active and supportive for processes of collectivization and identity formation. The prevailing emphasis on escapism as a central motive for musical theatre reception must thus be reconsidered.

Andere Orte, andere Körper : zum Verhältnis von Affekt, Heterotopie und Techno im Berghain
    (2015) Henschel, Robert
The text deals with a Berlin techno club called Berghain. It tries to define the place using Foucaults concept of heterotopia as a space that is located simultaniousely within the boundaries of society and on its outside. Within its walls the rules of aesthetic perception and construction of identity follow different mechanisms compared to the ones in everyday life, the latter being embedded into capitalist modes of production and consumption. Using Deleuze and Guattaris notion of affect the text tries to conceptualize the human body and techno music as constructs following the same principles of formation, leaving Berghain as a complex rhizomatic structure that, if regarded as a tool, offers possibilities of critiquing capitalist structures.

AABA, refrain, chorus, bridge, prechorus : song forms and their historical development
(2015) Appen, Ralf von; Frei-Hauenschild, Markus
This paper deals with different dimensions of the formal construction of songs in 20th century popular music. First, it proposes that the form of songs is not only an obligatory starting point for analysis but is actually itself a worthwhile object of interpretation. It explains how the analysis of the formal song structure can produce meaningful insights on a semantic, symbolic, and functional level. Secondly, the authors provide a critical discussion on the use of prevalent terms such as chorus, refrain, verse, bridge, etc. They show that a study of the historical evolution both of constituent song parts, and of song forms in general, is necessary to overcome the internal contradictions and incompatibilities of the current terminology. This approach is the center of this paper. It refers to the authors analysis of c. 3000 songs spanning the whole 20th century with a focus on the decisive years 1920 to 1970. Illustrating the results with a large number of examples, the authors trace the development of the AABA-form, various verse/chorus-forms, the evolution of the prechorus and various other song parts, and song form models. The findings are supported by statistical data based on the US Billboard Top 100, and show the prevalence of certain models as well as specific trends in historic change. Finally, the paper shows that the awareness of formal conventions and particularities can be an essential pre-condition for the analysis of popular music s cultural meanings.
