Abstract

The current situation of organic farming in Germany and Western Europe will be reported on. The first step of the reflection is the evaluation of the current agricultural situation. The situation is characterized by surplus production and stress on the environment. The cause of these two negative symptoms is the so-called 'technological treadmill': A spiral of declining prices, increasing yields and the intensification of conventional production.Measures of the Common European Agrarian Policy will be introduced which were initiated at the beginning of the 90's, especially in order to reduce the agrarian surplus production. The effect of these measures on development of organic farming will be reported on. Critical aspects of the AGENDA 2000 as well as new opportunities for organic farming will be commented on. The new opportunities result from its assessable and demonstrable positive environment performances. Statements will be made on the potential of the development of organic farming particularly in protected areas as well as on necessary managing fields, for example subsidy, marketing, research, education and agricultural advisory service. Finally, the specifics of organic farming in East-Germany and the factors restraining its development will be mentioned.
