Abstract
In 1992 the German Research Council (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) decided to establish the interdisciplinary research programme "Settlement Processes and the Formation of States in the Tibetan Himalayas". It was aimed at improving the historical knowledge of the natural and cultural landscape of the High Himalayas characterized by Tibetan culture and tradition. Within the project, research was concentrated southern Mustan and particularly the village of Kagbeni. This paper presents an introduction to the research programme, describing its aims and the region under study. Geographically, the high mountain environment makes for a habitat of extreme living conditions. Regardless, settlement processes in the region have been going on in various forms for thousands of years as witnessed by a multitude of abandoned sites like monasteries and castles. Typical for the regions are also extensive cave systems with rock engravings.Link to publications or other datasets
